Filing for your Georgia Homestead Tax Exemption

If you purchased a home in 2020, it’s time to file your Homestead Tax Exemption!

This is a tax exemption you receive for your primary residence in the state of Georgia. As the new owner of a home in 2020 you must apply for this exemption – it is not automatic. Once you apply and receive the exemption once, it does continue each year. 

 

The homestead exemption provides the homeowner with a reduced taxable property value provided that:

    1.) The home is occupied by the homeowner on January 1, 2021

    2.) The homeowner applies for the homestead exemption in the county where the property is located.

The deadline to file for homestead exemption in most Georgia counties is April 1, 2020. This is not connected to income tax, and is not done by your normal tax preparer. Full instructions are listed at the link below.
